Ahh, the Nintendo DS. Everyone here at Household Hacker has one, and we enjoy ours immensely. It is indeed the pinnacle of portable entertainment. It does have one basic flaw however- no hard drive! But we can fix that! Enter the Supercard, which basically makes your DS’s hopes and dreams of true greatness a reality. Here we briefly explain the Supercard and a list of some of the things you can do with your new SuperDS!

In order to play media you must use the Supercard coupled with a flash card (SD or CF, SD being the popular choice) loaded with your backed up games, movies, music, whatever. The Supercard is about 50 bucks and you should be able to find a flash card anywhere for cheap (or you probably already have one squirreled away, perhaps currently occupying a digital camera?). So after getting a Supercard, you have a lot of additional options for doing stuff with your DS. All you have to do is plug it and the memory card in, and go. It couldn’t be easier!

  • You can browse the Internet(as seen below):

Takes advantage of the two screens for the keyboard. Very cool.
  • Using VOIP to make house calls:

As any smart phone should do, you need to be able to call people on their telephones! Here is a guy who has created a working hack for the DS. As of now there is no easy solution for calling people using your DS so you may have to wait a bit. Here’s a video example though of how far along DS telephony service is coming along!
  • Now you know that the DS can obviously play DS games, even Gameboy Advance games. But did you know it can play your favorite early PC games as well? Now you can play your favorite King’s Quest game while on the bus, or when you should be working, or in the car (just not while driving, please). Here’s a list of compatible games.

How about Super Nintendo games as well? How about Wolfenstein 3d? Or perhaps the Oregon Trail? Or freakin’ DOOM!? :-)

DSOrganize is meant as a homebrew organizer application for the Nintendo DS that should have come built in in the first place. It is currently capable of storing daily and hourly memos, addresses, todo lists and simple scribbles. It also includes a full file browser and calculator. The file browser is capable of displaying images and playing back many audio formats as well as launching homebrew and viewing/editing text and html. Internet capabilities of DSOrganize include an IRC client, an online homebrew database, streaming audio support, and a rudimentary web browser.

There’s certainly a ton of stuff to do with the DS to keep you busy for ages. We’re excited to see what people will come up with next! Happy hacking!

PS: For those of you who have been emailing us with problems with your DS signal being weak, try reverse engineering our Xbox 360 WiFi hack and mounting it on your router. Hope this helps!
