Here are some tips for keeping your PC clean and clear of spyware and viruses. We’ve all had to deal with system slowdown, so use this guide and send it to someone who might need to read it! All programs mentioned in this article are COMPLETELY FREE. Enjoy!

  • Step 1 Update Windows! This is an important task and should be done immediately. Windows being updated to the latest available version will patch security holes and keep your PC much safer than had you not updated. This should be a no-brainer, but is worth mentioning off the bat for the less experienced users. Windows should always be updated to the latest version.
  • Step 2 Use Firefox as your web browser. It loads quicker than Internet Explorer anyway, and is less vulnerable to attacks than IE as well. If you find a page doesn’t work in Firefox, you can simply right click the link and select “Open link in IE tab,” which emulates Internet Explorer.
  • Step 3 Scan the everliving crap out of your computer from time to time if things start to mysteriously slow down! Use Ad-aware, Spybot, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Windows Defender, to name a few.
  • Step 4 Defragment your disks, especially if you download a lot of files. This will keep your hard drive running optimally.
  • Step 5 Clean out the bloat from your system registry and startup menu by using CCleaner and Registery Mechanic.
  • Step 6 Buy some compressed air and tidy up the inside of your PC, remove dust buildup from your motherboard and components. Dust buildup can contribute to overheating and is very bad for the health of your computer, laptops especially.
  • Step 7 Update system drivers. If you have a dedicated graphics card in your PC, make sure it’s updated to the latest version! New versions for your card come out every 6 months or so.
  • Step 8 (Advanced users only) Go to your run bar and type “msconfig.” It will bring up a menu that allows you to tweak your computer’s startup applications. Uncheck the ones that aren’t necessary to speed up the time it takes to start Windows.
